As a child, I was told more than once by my parents, “You didn’t hear a word I said!” I heard, but I did not listen. The term “hear” in the Bible carries the idea of listening and heeding.
“Hear instruction.” Heed wisdom’s instruction. God has always been the fulness of wisdom and all of His marvelous works are done according to it.
“And be wise.” The one who hears and obeys wisdom’s instruction will be wise himself. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
“And refuse it not.” It is the foolish one who rejects wisdom’s instruction. “It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23). How are we hearing God’s words?
