O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps (Jeremiah 10:23).
The hordes of Babylon were bearing down on Jerusalem and the Promised Land. Israel had forsaken God and turned to idols (Jeremiah 1:11-16). They had ignored and forsaken the direction of the Lord and they would soon suffer the consequences.
In America we admire self-reliance. We love individualism and initiative and it serves us well in business, industry, research and education. But it does not serve well in religion.
When it comes to pleasing God, it is not within man to direct his own steps. The need today is as it was in Jeremiah’s day: “Thus says the Lord: ‘Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls’” (Jeremiah 6:16).
