But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you (Matthew 5:44).

Set in contrast to what they had “heard” (Matthew 5:43), the Lord issued words that were and are difficult to follow. It is easy enough to have affection for and do good to those who have affection for and do good to us (Luke 6:32-33).

The true character of Christianity, however, is to follow the Lord’s example (1 Peter 2:21- 24), and have love (agape) for and do good to those who will likely never repeat the same to us in kind (Romans 12:20-21). It is this attitude alone and this exclusive course that fulfills “the royal law” (James 2:8) and acquires for one a “blessing” of inheritance (1 Peter 3:8-9).
