The People of God

The Twenty-Second of Numbers records the encampment of the Israelites in the plain of Moab. Fearing this presence as a threat, Balak, the Moabite King, summoned Balaam, whom he perceived could effectively curse Israel so that they could be defeated. God allowed Balaam to say only what he was Divinely permitted to say, and any attempt to curse Israel resulted only in a blessing. Consequently, Balak dismissed Balaam with neither reward nor compensation. Within a year, Balaam had suffered a violent death at the hands of the Israelites. Centuries later, Peter would write of those who had forsaken the right way and had gone astray, following the way of Balaam, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. Jude also wrote of woes upon those who ran greedily after the way of Balaam. To be certain, none will be blessed whose intent and purpose is to bring either harm or curse upon the people of God.
