Inward and Spiritual

While the Twenty-First of Exodus clearly stated the Mosaic Law of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, the Savior, at the Fifth of Matthew, taught the turning of the left cheek to him who had smitten the right one, the surrendering of one’s cloak to him who had sued for his coat, and the bearing of a burden two miles for him who had compelled him to carry it only one. Had the Jews sought a legal remedy for these wrongs, they would have found the Roman authorities indifferent to their plight. Such is evidenced at the Eighteenth of Acts when Gallio, a Roman proconsul, refused to be a judge of matters regarding Jewish law. Besides, the Romans may have been the perpetrators to which the Savior had referred. The Lord taught that the solution for such things is far less outward and legal than it is inward and spiritual.
