Worthy of Repentance

At the Third of Luke, there came publicans to John the Baptist to be baptized, and they asked him what they should do to manifest repentance. John told them they must exact no more tax from the people than was appointed unto them to collect. Perhaps it was in this very manner that the chief of the publicans became rich. As a tax collector, Zacchaeus told the Savior at the Nineteenth of Luke that he would repay fourfold to any man he overcharged. Such a fourfold restoration was in-keeping with the Mosaic statute of Exodus Twenty-Two, and the Lord declared that salvation had come that day to the house of Zacchaeus. As John taught his audiences, “Bring forth fruits worthy of repentance.”
