And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?” (1 Samuel 17:29).

These questions jump off the page, signaling a confused and frustrated stress of David. Goliath was mocking God’s army and, in the process, mocking God. Israel, professing to serve Him, was shaking like an atheist people at the very sight of the giant warrior.

The meaning behind the apostle Paul’s instruction, “Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). The people who professed godliness acted like atheists. They thought they could achieve their goals without the help of God.

David dispatched Goliath’s head that day, but he did something else: He reminded us that there are important moments in our lives in which we should arrest the people we love who are acting like they do not really believe there is a God watching over us. Let’s purpose to ask those people today: “Is there not a cause?”
