Not Need Him at All

As Jesus sat at dinner in the home of a Pharisee, the Seventh of Luke’s Gospel records that a sinful woman washed the Savior’s feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. The Lord’s host seemed to doubt Jesus’ ability to discern the woman’s character and to question within himself whether the Savior should even allow Himself to be touched by such a person. Though ancient hospitality might have offered either the washing of the feet of guests or the water for them to do so, Jesus pointed out that His host had done neither. Two years later, the Lord used the washing of his disciples’ feet at the Thirteenth of John to teach them the lesson of humble service. It appears that humility is more evident in those who recognize their own sins and less evident in those who either believe they are already close to the Lord or who believe they do not need Him at all.
