Thy Salvation

The providence and foreknowledge of God have manifested themselves in numerous ways. Possibly, one of these ways may involve the names given to people, and the relevance of those names to the roles they would play. An example of this is one of Noah’s three sons, Japheth, whose name loosely translates to mean “to widen or enlarge.” This is exactly what happened when Noah declared Japheth to be superior to his younger brother, whom Noah perceived as having been disrespectful. A far more important example of this concept is recorded at the First of Matthew, where the angel of the Lord told Joseph that the Child born to the virgin Mary was to be called Jesus, for He would save His people from their sins. The Savior’s Name translates as “Jehovah is salvation,” and in no one could this be more greatly exemplified. As the just and devout man Simeon said of the infant Jesus at the Second of Luke, “Mine eyes have seen Thy salvation.”
