The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them (Deuteronomy 33:27).
Moses was old, near death. With one last opportunity to speak to Israel, as a father to his children, he encouraged them to serve God by reminding them of all God had done and would continue to do. He was their refuge, their place of safety. His arms of power would cover and protect them. He would fend off their enemies and give them peace. God cared for His people.
Still today God is our refuge. Still He offers us safety and protection. Still He has our enemy under His control and makes peace available to us. His care for Israel foreshadowed the far more extensive care He offers His church. Therefore “cast all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
