In order to pattern himself in a godly manner, the apostle Paul instructed Timothy to devote himself to the reading of the Word, to the doctrine it taught, and to the exhortation it provided for himself and others. It was unto these things that Timothy was to wholly give himself as he meditated upon them. Paul assured Timothy that it would be in this manner that others would witness the benefits of these things in him. As a matter of fact, Paul cautioned at the close of First Timothy Four that there was no other way for him to either save himself nor those that heard him. Unless Timothy gave heed to the doctrine and continued therein, neither he nor his hearers stood to gain a single spiritual benefit.
