According to His Purpose

God had forbidden at the Twentieth of Exodus the arbitrary taking of human life. However, upon numerous occasions, God directed the waging of wars so destructive that, at times, whole peoples were essentially exterminated. At the Twentieth of Deuteronomy, Jehovah commanded the utter destruction of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites. None that breathed were to be saved alive out of the cities of these which God gave Israel for an inheritance. This was so that God’s own people would not be taught the abominations of the heathen. God’s displeasure with war is evidenced when He forbade King David to build the temple. Yet, He sent armies into war when the cause was according to His purpose.
