Unholy Purposes

At the Eleventh of Exodus, Jehovah instructed that the Israelites should ask the Egyptians for jewels and precious metals as preparation was made for God’s chosen people to leave the country. Chapter Twelve records that the Lord gave the Israelites favor among the Egyptians, whom they spoiled by asking for and receiving most anything they wanted. Later, these valuables would be used to construct the Tabernacle and its furnishings. Yet, as Moses was long absent while receiving the Law from God, the Thirty-Second of Exodus records the fashioning of a golden calf which was presented as the gods which brought them out of Egypt. The sin of idolatry and making of graven images to worship is exacerbated by the fact that the gold used to make the calf was doubtless that intended for use in the Tabernacle. Let no one become such a poor steward of what God has provided that those things should be given to unholy purposes.
