“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world…” (1 John 2:15a). Do not allow yourself to be conformed to the world (Romans 12:1), nor friends with the world (James 4:4).
After the forty years of wandering, the generation which grew up in the wilderness was instructed to not “forget the Lord your God” and pursue idols or they would be destroyed (Deuteronomy 11:20).
God has always called his people to complete obedience. Jesus said in the presence of the Tempter, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).
Every Jewish child was to be taught that loving God above all else and keeping His commandments was primary. The “se-ma” or prayer of Israel was always: “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4). So vital was this concept that parents were to teach it to their children at all times (Deuteronomy 6:7).
