O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever (Deuteronomy 5:29).

Many things are touted as being “heart healthy.” Foods, vitamins, and activities are promoted as being good for the heart and thus good for the overall well-being of humanity. There is no doubt that bodily exercise is of some profit (1 Timothy 4:8).

There is also the need for healthy spiritual hearts. Such an heart is characterized as one with a deep reverence for God (“fear”) and one that keeps God’s commands habitually. That kind of spiritual heart is not only good for us, but also good for our children. No wonder we are admonished to diligently guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23).
